A $295 million settlement has been reached on behalf of a nationwide class of Stericycle customers, following a class-action lawsuit accusing the company of automatically inflating customer bills up to 18% every six months. This class includes more than 246,000 dentists, veterinarians and other small business owners across the country. (Here’s the ADANews article.)

Last year, ADANews posted a detailed report that showed dentists nationwide reporting escalating fees that were not explicitly stated in their Stericycle contracts. These contracts were automatically renewing with increased prices and a small window to cancel before it re-ups for several more years.

Under the new settlement agreement, Stericycle will discontinue the pricing practices that affected the customer base that Stericycle identified as their “small quantity” customers.  According to the suit, these accounts made up 97 percent of Stericycle’s customers worldwide.

Medical Waste Mailback Services: the Right Solution for Small Quantity Waste Generators

HealthFirst continues to hear from our customers about the benefits they get by switching to mailback services for their sharps and medical waste disposal, such as the HealthFirst Sharps Management line of products—the only mailback service endorsed for ADA members. These services provide an economical alternative to costly pickup services that tie you to a long term contract.

Typical mailback kits include specially packaged sharps containers with pre-paid shipping, waste processing and tracking services included.  Smaller 1-quart to 2-gallon containers, ideal for dental needles and ampules, are available in single and multi-packs for use in each operatory. Large capacity containers are also available, which are perfect for the removal of full sharps containers and “red bag” medical waste from your practice.

These self-managed programs allow the generator to fill a package to capacity and decide when to return the package for waste processing.  This allows the customer to maximize the cost savings for the service.
